A bit of history: Buch and Deichmann (B&D) Denmark started up in the early 1970’s. Designer Ketty Dalsgaard, inspired by the ropes of local fishing vessels in Denmark, started with a collection of bright coloured plastic bracelets. The pieces were made of a nylon type of softer plastic, lightweight and with a unique, very subtle “glow”.
B&D vintage barrettesThe collection then grew to include plastic pins, earrings and by the 1980’s, B&D focused mostly on the much wanted hair accessories that were only available at finer department store such as Macy’s, Harrods, Galeries Lafayette, and Bloomingdales. These barrettes came in a variety of vivid colors – so you could match your any colour shirt to your any colour hair accessory.
At present, the company focuses on reading glasses. The plastic jewellery pieces thus are highly collectable.

In my search for a hair pin model, suitable for water resistant customised 3D printing someone pointed me to this unique collection of Ketty Dalsgaard. And indeed: how applicable it is?

B&D vintage hair pinIt is not known to me why the collection is no longer available, neither why B&D has completely left the hair accessories market. However the unique designs – entirely made of one material and feasible in a wide color palette, are certainly worth to be tried out on a 3D printer. And maybe… this could be a perfect occasion to re-market those beautiful vintage hair barrettes.
It suffices to make a query on Etsy or Pinterest to see what a huge fan base is waiting for this to happen.

Could we have the Buch and Deichmann hair barrettes back on the market?

Dear Gayla and Al, thank you for your comment on this post. Indeed, by contacting Henning Deichmann I might get more info about the original plastic barrettes made by Ketty Dalsgaard. Searching on Ketty Dalsgaard so far didn’t give any good results, but this is an interesting new lead. Again, many thanks!

The hair accessories at Buch+Deichmann was actually not designed by Ketty Dalsgaard (she designed the original nylon bangles) but by the design team at Buch+Deichmann at the beautiful manor “Kulhus” north of Copenhagen. I know it because I founded the company and developed the whole concept. The “secret” was that we worked in a nylon material that was unbreakable and therefore many products are still as good as new. It will be difficult to make this on a 3D printer as it will lack the flexibility of the nylon material. Anyway the copyrights are still owned by Evita Peroni (www.evitaperoni.com) . Wishing you a fine weekend 🙂

Hi, thank you for sharing! I’m testing to reproduce these hair clips via 3D printing, see http://www.3dhairdo.com/prototyping/. But only in the context of an education in 3D printing. The copyrights are owned by Evita Peroni (www.evitaperoni.com)

          Hello Pia,
Thank you for sharing this story!
I’m prototyping with a 3D printer to create beautiful and coulourful barrettes. But still some testing to do before they can be brought to the market.

Hi, I still have a pair or moss green barrets or hair slides as we call them in the uk. I bought them in Bentalls department store in Kingston-upon-Thames on my first shopping trip on my own to a large town when I was about 13 forty years ago. I can remember agonizing about what colour to buy. I also bought a pair of combs by same company. I lost the combs as they slid out of my fine and thin hair. But not those green hairs slides. I still have and wear them. I have been looking for more ever since. I’m now 53.

Thank you for your enthusiasm and feedback!
I’m working on a 3D-printable file to reproduce the barrettes with a 3D printer. That would also allow to create countless colors and shapes.
      Regards K.

    Hello,

So sorry if this reply is not allowed, but I think people are generally missing these Buch and Deichmann hair accessories and I have a ton of unused pieces for sale in my Etsy shop. I came across your post while doing research on the pieces.

    Here is the link! https://foreveryoungcanada.etsy.com
